It is with great sorrow that the Staff of the Mayors’ Institute on City Design announce the death of the Honorable Bob Blanchard on June 17th, 2008.

Mayor of the City of Santa Rosa, California since 2006, and an alumnus of the Mayors’ Institute, Mayor Blanchard will long be remembered for his enthusiasm, humor, and commitment to good city governance. He was deeply committed to improving the quality of life in Santa Rosa and believed that through the use of good urban design, great results could be achieved. MICD Director, Jess Zimbabwe, stated that, "Mayor Blanchard was a consummate leader, and was deeply passionate about improving development for downtown Santa Rosa. It’s a honor that we can contribute to continuing that work on his behalf."

Mayor Blanchard was so impressed by his experience at the 39th session of the Mayors’ Institute in July of 2007, that he immediately responded to the call for letters of interest when the Mayors’ Institute announced that they would be offering technical assistance programs to alumni mayors. As a result of his keen interest in the program, the staff of the Mayors’ Institute, along with a design team, will be returning to Santa Rosa this July to assist the City as they go about revitalizing downtown Santa Rosa. The technical assistance program, the first of its kind, will be dedicated in honor of Mayor Blanchard.
